Kansas City, MO 2025
This sticker is designed by Meredith Lucius in collaboration with Allison Bowman to be included in a sticker vending machine as part of an educational prairie conservation project.
“Prairie In The Parks: Sticker Vending Machine” is a project created by Allison Bowman, funded by ArtsKC’s Inspiration Grant. The project consists of a sticker vending machine filled with four different stickers designed by local visual artists. Each sticker will feature aspects of locations in Johnson County parks maintained by JCPRD Natural Resources and Kansas City Wildlands with natural areas of conserved prairie including Ogg Prairie at Shawnee Mission Park, Kill Creek Prairie at Kill Creek Park, Cedar Niles Prairie at Cedar Niles Park, and Ernie Miller Prairie at Ernie Miller Park. What sets this sticker vending machine apart from any normal vending machine is the education component behind the project. The sticker vending machine will help tell the story of how tallgrass prairie once covered 170 million acres of North America, but within a generation most of it had been transformed into farms, cities, and towns. Today less than 4% remains intact, mostly in the Kansas Flint Hills.
The sticker vending machine will be accessible to the public starting February of 2025 for people to interact with and get stickers from. The project will partner with local community centers and libraries in Shawnee, Olathe, De Soto, and Overland Park, Kansas to house the sticker machine while it travels around Johnson County, KS. This project is targeted toward younger generations and families with children to inform and educate about what prairie conservation is, where to find natural prairie land in our own community, and what we can do to help keep it safe.
